What Does a Travel Agent Actually Do? From the First Idea to the Final Booking

When people hear “travel agent”, they often think of someone who books flights and hotels.
And yes, that is part of it. But there is so much more that happens behind the scenes when you work with a travel agent.
For me, it starts with getting to know the person or family travelling and understanding what they actually want from their holiday.
It starts with finding out about you
Every holiday is different because every traveller is different.
Some clients want a relaxing week by the beach. Others want to see as much as possible, while families might need a holiday that works for children of different ages.
So before I start looking at options, I want to know what is important to you.
Where would you like to go? What do you enjoy? What sort of accommodation do you like? Are there any things you definitely want to include?
This helps me understand what will work for you, rather than just sending through a list of options.
Researching the right options
There can be an overwhelming number of hotels, flights, tours and packages available online.
It can take hours to compare them all, and sometimes the cheapest or most popular option isn't necessarily the right one for your holiday.
This is where having a travel agent can save you a lot of time.
I can look at the options available and narrow them down based on what you've told me. Location, room types, flight times, inclusions, transfers and the overall experience all come into consideration.
Making sure everything works together
Booking each part of a holiday separately can sometimes make things more complicated than they need to be.
Your flights need to work with your accommodation. Transfers need to line up with your arrival and departure times. If you're travelling between different destinations, the timing needs to make sense too.
When putting together an itinerary, I look at the holiday as a whole rather than just booking each part individually.
That can make the difference between a trip that feels easy and one that has you constantly checking the time.
Helping with the little things
It's often the little details that make a holiday feel more personal.
Maybe you're celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Maybe you need connecting rooms for the kids. Maybe you want a particular type of room or would prefer a hotel close to the places you want to visit.
These things might seem small, but they can make a big difference to your experience.
Giving you someone to contact
Travel doesn't always go exactly to plan.
Flights can be delayed, weather can change and sometimes plans need to be adjusted while you're away.
Having someone who knows your booking and understands your trip can be reassuring when something unexpected happens.
You're not left trying to work everything out on your own.
Saving you time
This is one of the biggest reasons clients come to me.
They don't necessarily need someone to tell them where they should go. Often, they simply don't have the time to spend hours researching and comparing everything themselves.
I can take care of that part and bring the options together, so you can make decisions without having to spend your evenings going through endless tabs and reviews.
It's about creating a holiday that suits you
There isn't one perfect holiday or one way of travelling.
A family holiday, a romantic getaway and a special celebration will all need a different approach.
That's why I take the time to understand what you're looking for before putting your trip together.
At Book The Trip, I can help with everything from flights and accommodation to transfers, tours and personalised itineraries, making sure the different pieces work well together.
So, what does a travel agent actually do?
A little bit of everything.
We research, compare, organise, book and help bring all the details together. But most importantly, we get to know our clients and understand what matters to them.
Because a holiday should feel exciting to look forward to, not like another project you have to manage.
